HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: From 2005-2007 there were 28,000 households in Putnam County. The average household size was 2.6 people.

Families made up 66 percent of the households in Putnam County. This figure includes both married-couple families (46 percent) and other families (19 percent). Nonfamily households made up 34 percent of all households in Putnam County. OCCUPATIONS AND TYPE OF EMPLOYER: Among the most common occupations were: Sales and office occupations, 24 percent; Management, professional, and related occupations, 20 percent; Construction, extraction, maintenance and repair occupations, 18 percent; Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 17 percent; and Service occupations, 17 percent. Seventy-eight percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 16 percent was Federal, state, or local government workers; and 6 percent was Self-employed in own not incorporated business workers.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Seventy-seven percent of Putnam County workers drove to work alone from 2005-2007, 17 percent carpooled, less than 0.5 percent took public transportation, and 4 percent used other means. The remaining 3 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 30.3 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in Putnam County was $31,493. Sixty-six percent of the households received earnings and 21 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Forty-one percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $13,238. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: From 2005-2007, 22 percent of people were in poverty. Twenty-eight percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 22 percent of people 65 years old and over. Fifteen percent of all families and 35 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: From 2005-2007, Putnam County had 28,000 occupied housing units - 21,000 (76 percent) owner occupied and 6,600 (24 percent) renter occupied. Seven percent of the households did not have telephone service and 7 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi Vehicle households were not rare. Thirty-eight percent had two vehicles and another 16 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $843, nonmortgaged owners $265, and renters $550. Thirty-two percent of owners with mortgages, 13 percent of owners without mortgages, and 51 percent of renters in Putnam County spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.
